Their only known male heir was

JOHN(2) CHANNING, born in Boston on December 17, 1714. On October 16, 1740 he married MARY CHALONER, the daughter of Ninyon Chaloner and Anne Tyrrell Brown(?). Mary was the widow of Dr. James Robinson by whom she had one child, Sara Ann, who married Caleb Gardner.

From Ezra Stiles LITERARY DIARY, I:91 for Feb. 20, 1771:
an excessive cold Day & Eveng. Fahr. Thermo five above Cypher. This Evening at VIh 25. died Mr. John Channing; an hospitable & generous Friend to me -- an immoveable Advocate for the Doctrines of Grace & particularly Justifica by the great Atonemt & the divine Righteousness of the Ld J.C. impouted to the penitent Believer. He was much of a Gentleman, a Merchant of Eminence negotiating 3 or #4000 Ster. per ann, in Commerce. About 1750 he was largely in Trade in Compa with Mr Chaloner his Wifes Brother, & own six or seven large Vessels Brigs &c. In 1755 tey falied for #150,000. Old Tnr and perhaps the crdtiors lost #80 or #100,000 or about Tne Thousd Sterlg. This gained them many Enemies. Recoverg from a Bankruptcy Mr Channg again went into Trade and from 1760 to 1770 traded chielf in Euopean Goods to aobut 3 or #4000, ster per Ann In which Time he met with Losses above #1500. ster. besides #12200 set. bad debts. It is feared an Insolvency must take place on a settlemt of his Estate. How far the principle of Righetousness & Moral Virtue was affected in the mixt scenes of Commerce, God only knows. It is greatly happy to live disentangled form the World. He died aet. 56 He was born in Boston, & I think baptized by one of the Dr. Mathers. His FAther left Engld in Q. Anns Reign -- was a Purtan -- & his Grandmother used to carry Victuals under her Cloke to the puritan Ministers in prison last Century. He never would be perverted from an Affection tothe puritan Cause. And tho' much in polite Life, neve learned profane Swerg nor Drinking -- tho' h loved affluence & even luxurious Entertainments for his Friends. He loved & kepot a good Table, lived high as to Eating, greatly -- intirely temperate as to Drinkg. He was a sensible Man, sociable, of a noble spirit detesting every Thing mean & dishonorable.

He was among the original Proprietors of the Redwood Library of Newport, RI, in 1747.
